Guidelines for Practice

The following are just a few basic guidelines that our community has adopted both to promote harmony and to ensure that we maintain a safe and sacred space for taking practice:

1.  Once inside the shala commence bringing your awareness inward.

2.  Honor those with whom you are practicing with the gift of your breath rather than the gift of your speech.

3.  An established personal practice is contingent on the cooperation and dedication of the group.  “My space, my practice, my looks, my experience” ought to be laid aside for “I am aware of how I am benefiting from, and contributing to, the group energy.”

4.  If space is limited, please relax for a moment or two.  Your teacher will find a place for you.

5.  Please communicate to the teacher before practice if you are in poor health (mental or physical) and/or have injuries.

6.  We must try to have as much fun as we can with what we have.

7.  Please hydrate well--prior to, and after, practice.  Also, you will find it more pleasurable to practice on an empty stomach.

8.  Storage for mats is provided but please remove rugs and towels, and mats ought to be cleaned at home.

9.  Use of electronics in or near the shala is unwelcome.

10.  Watching practice videos of other aspirants on the worldwideweb is discouraged.

11.  Take rest: allow ten minutes for lying on your back after practice.  If you are very busy, please shorten, or halve, your asana practice.

12.  Observe silence after yoga practice.
